St Albans is a peaceful and quiet commuter city (yes city!) about 20 minutes outside of London. It’s probably best known for its Roman ruins and stunning cathedral, but it also has a vibrant music scene. Leave the train station and you are seconds walk from the beating heart of the St Albans live music scene, The Horn. Originally called the Horn of Plenty and at some point, in the 1990’s owned by Vinnie Jones’ mum. Renamed in 2007 to simply The Horn, it’s since won UK Music Pub of the Year twice and UK Entertainment Pub of the Year.
Tonight it plays host to an act that are riding a wave of praise and adoration from across the media. This is one night of a tour that’s taken Good Health Good Wealth the length and breadth of the country. Night after night, sold out show after sold out show – and you can see why.
GHGW are a London-based alternative duo comprising vocalist/producer Bruce Breakey and guitarist/producer Simon Kuzmickas. The two of them bring a smouldering energy to the room as they open with “Guiness” an old track, released in 2021. It’s a slow burner but includes every ingredient that has made GHGW so likable. Witty, observational lyrics with melodic hooks. There’s more than a hint of punk and hip-hop as screeching guitars play over electronica beats.
I chatted to Bruce before the show and asked how the tour was going. He expressed the distinct satisfaction you get as an artist when you turn up in a town miles away from home and see a full room of people who have come to see you.
North London to St Albans is not as far as some other venues on the tour so, not quite a homecoming but this feels local and special as a result. A few songs in and the crowd are in good voice and have found their feet. This is music you can both mosh and dance to simultaneously and from front-to-back, everyone does.
The hour-long set focuses on the 2025 release This Time Next Year We’ll Be Millionaires which Breakey reminds everyone is almost a year old. Suggesting the millionaire goal had not yet been reached and encouraged everyone from this affluent area to go to the merch store following the show and contribute to the band’s coffers.
“Beautiful Boy” is personal and dedicated to Bruce’s dad, Pete. “Full Circle” is announced as the final song and the crowd literally embrace the singer as he takes himself off the stage and into the crowd. Once the song concludes, the two leave the room and following a rousing “one more song” from the crowd, return for their finale.
They finish with the title track from the album, “This Time Next Year We’ll Be Millionaires”. There are more than a few “wows” from the people around me who are seeing GHGW for the first time. “I knew they would be good, but I didn’t know they would be THAT good” one photographer said to me. “Yep, they are absolutely THAT good”, I replied.
