Interview by Helen Craven
I caught up with Billy D, Clio, Lola and Vera from Man/Woman/Chainsaw on Friday ahead of their gig at the O2 Academy Liverpool, and in the short time we spent together, I genuinely felt like I got to know this exciting up and coming six piece. Hailing from London and tipped by NME last year as a band to watch, they have that rare mix of talent, chemistry, and sheer likeability that hints at serious longevity.
We talked about everything from green-room picnics to alarm-clock mishaps - and, of course, plenty of music.
A Busy Band with a Big Year Ahead
MWC have had a packed 2025, and 2026 looks set to follow the same trajectory. Four of the band members are currently juggling the small matter of finishing their degrees and graduating, but once June hits, they’re gearing up for a wave of new tracks, more gigs, and - fingers crossed - an album waiting in the wings.
Their recent shows have seen them testing out new material, and it’s clear their creativity is flowing. Their writing process is wonderfully eclectic:
All Music Mag -
So, let’s talk about writing the music, what is your process for that?
Lola - It depends. Vera or Billy might come with a song, usually, with lyrics. And then we’ll rejig it.
Clio: Decorate it!
Billy: I think more recently a lot has been jamming. Maybe a riff idea or a jam, and then (to Vera) like you and Billy write the lyrics.
Lola: When we wrote Only Girl we did like a joking shoegaze jam.
Clio: At like ten in morning as well…
Vera: I prefer if there’s music already, I find that a bit more inspiring.
Billy: So basically, the answer is every way.
A Band Built on Solid Relationships
What struck me most was how grounded and connected they are as a group. When I asked what advice they’d give to anyone wanting to follow in their footsteps, Vera didn’t hesitate:
“Just go and do it” and Billy added “and make sure you have a great relationship with the people you’re creating with.”
And honestly, you can see that ethos in everything they do. Creativity and productivity rely on trust, and this band has it in spades.
Speaking of trust, their tour manager Jojo is clearly the unsung hero of the operation. When I threw some quickfire questions at them, she was unanimously voted the person who gets them out of any sticky situation.
Quickfire Round: Getting to Know MWC
- Most likely to ignore the alarm clock: Lola (after a recent oversleeping incident!)
- Most likely to give their last pound to charity: All of them - genuinely.
- Best at giving good advice: Lola.
- Funniest: Billy Doyle.
- Most easily distracted by shiny things: Clio.
One to Watch
With a brilliant 2025 behind them and an even bigger 2026 ahead, Man/Woman/Chainsaw are absolutely a band to keep your eye on.
Lola told me, “We’ve got big stuff coming, some exciting things coming which we’re working on now and we’re all really gassed about”.
There’s no slowing this lot down… well, apart from a couple of dissertation deadlines.
Their energy, creativity, and connection make them something special.
