TOURS THE UK IN OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER
Marking a formal departure from the John Butler trio moniker, John Butler, one of Australia’s leading independent artists, releases his tenth studio album ‘PRISM’ today, 5th September. It is aptly led by the focus track ‘Going Solo’. Watch the video here.
‘PRISM’ represents a full spectrum of emotions including love, loss and politics, with Butler using his early busking days as impetus for the direction of the album.
“’Going Solo’ is about needing space, needing to unplug from the rat race and this crazy world that seems to be getting crazier,” Butler explains. “But it’s also about losing the “trio” moniker and going back to just my name, back to where it all began.”
‘PRISM’ features some of the most candid and powerful work of Butler’s two-decade career as one of Australia’s most successful independent musicians. It’s contemplative and explosive, joyous and free, funk-filled, cinematic and unapologetic.
After initial attempts to make the album stalled, Butler used a ‘mental scaffolding’ to structure the way forward which inspired the ‘Four Seasons’ framework. ‘PRISM’ is Season Three of Butler’s Four Season roll-out - which includes an album of meditations (‘Running River’) and a fully instrumental album (‘Still Searching’).
While ‘PRISM’ possesses the full throttle band sound, the twelve songs were crafted entirely solo by Butler and uber producer James Ireland (POND, San Cisco). After Butler began work on his own, he ultimately shared the production responsibilities with Ireland to create the final recordings.
As a musical revolutionary, political activist and environmental warrior, John Butler is one of Australia’s most prolific independent artists, forging his own path to success without surrender to major labels, corporate sponsors, or moral compromise.
With his new band–featuring original JBT member Michael Barker on drums, Michael Boase on percussion and Ian Peres on Bass/ keys, Butler will be touring Europe from October 30, with good friend and fellow WA muso, Noah Dillon, along for the ride as special guest.
