‘ROAD TO ROUEN’
Out on 3rd October via BMG
10th September 2025: Supergrass have today released a stirring live version of their cover of Gil Scott-Heron’s classic ‘Lady Day & John Coltrane,’ recorded during the band's performance at London’s legendary Ronnie Scott's in 2005. Available now across all digital platforms, listen here.
Originally penned by Scott-Heron for his 1971 debut Pieces of a Man, the song is a soulful tribute to the redemptive power of music. This live version captures the song’s intimacy in a uniquely atmospheric setting, tying directly into the themes of Road To Rouen, a record often regarded as the band’s most personal and experimental work.
A standout moment from the band’s mid-2000s live shows, the track showcases Supergrass’s ability to bring a soulful and atmospheric edge to their performances, paying tribute to one of Scott-Heron’s most iconic works.
'Lady Day and John Coltrane (Live at Ronnie Scott's)’ will be available as part of the band's 20th-anniversary edition of their critically acclaimed fifth studio album, ‘Road to Rouen,’ set for release via BMG on 3rd October. Pre order here. The new edition features remastered audio, selected live recordings, and the previously unreleased studio track Don’t Leave Me Alone. It will be available digitally, on Gatefold 2LP Petrol and Forest Green vinyl with printed inner sleeves, and as a 2CD digisleeve, both formats including a booklet with new liner notes by broadcaster Mark Radcliffe.
Speaking on the release, Mick Quinn said “Great to hear this again after all these years, with the very talented Satin Singh on Congas. If I remember, we all had raging hangovers from playing Hammersmith Working Men's Club with John Cooper Clarke the night before, who insisted on calling Danny, Mini Cooper."
Originally launched on 15th August, 2005, Road To Rouen reached #9 on the UK Top 10 chart. Marking a significant shift for the band, showcasing a more reflective and introspective sound with longer, orchestral arrangements.
Consisting of Gaz Coombes, Mick Quinn, Danny Goffey and Rob Coombes; Supergrass are one of the most important bands to emerge during the 1990s. Formed in Oxford in 1993, their accomplishments include several million record sales, 6 top 10 albums, 10 top 20 singles and accolades from the Brit Awards, Q Awards, NME Awards, and Ivor Novello Awards.
