On Wednesday 3rd September Nottingham-based five-piece Vona Vella released a sparkling new song Bear Trap through Strap Originals. Think spangling guitars, joyous drums with heady harmonies echoing indie-pop’s celebrated C86 era...
Bear Trap was recorded at the Albion Rooms studio in Margate and produced by Vona Vella and Jason Stafford (The Libertines, Jamie T, Sports Team)
Vona Vella's co-lead vocalist Dan Cunningham says of Bear Trap: “I was working a job, and it was a pretty nasty work environment, a café, and due to finances, I had to stay. One of the lyrics is, ‘I’ve been coming down with a fever, but it’s my fever dream’, because I couldn’t wait to be poorly, basically, so I didn’t have to go in! I think that’s quite understandable to the majority of people.”
Vona Vella have amassed 130k monthly listeners on Spotify and have supported not only The Libertines and solo Peter Doherty but Tim Burgess, Morcheeba, Hak Baker and Reverend and the Makers - plus they recently played The Great Escape and Come Together festivals.
They play the following shows this winter:
19 November - The Grove, Nottingham
20 November - Royal Park Cellars, Leeds
12 December - Supersonic Club, Paris
The video for Bear Trap was filmed by Miles Dyson as they headlined the first of their regular new music nights Vona Vella Presents At The Grove in Nottingham. Singer, Dan, who owns and runs The Grove nights and recording studio says: “Since opening The Grove we’ve met and worked with so many talented artists with huge potential that we felt we had to do something to help support them.”
In July, Vona Vella released the darkly anthemic corker Over and Over, which was given the Midas touch by BBC 6 Music's Chris Hawkins, Apple Music 1's Matt Wilkinson and playlisted on Radio X.
Since their eponymous debut album in 2023 (released on Strap Originals), the seed of their signature sound – wistful indie-pop harmonies, exquisitely blended male/female vocals – has not so much grown as erupted through the dream-pop meadow into a towering, flowering beanstalk. Today, with their new singles Over and Over and Bear Trap, the former indie-pop duo have spectacularly evolved into a dynamic five-piece band. As a five-piece, their innate pop sensibilities are now newly bolstered by a confident, thrilling propulsion.
Vona Vella was started by singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Izzy and Dan, who set about making thrillingly infectious dream pop as a male/female duo, reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin. The band officially formed in Autumn 2020, after Ross Godfrey from Morcheeba heard their single Sun and decided to remix it. Once released it proved an instant viral hit, racking up over a million streams in the blink of an eye.
The band released their debut EP Go Outside Forever, in early 2022, which was co-produced by Liam Gallagher and Peter Doherty guitarist Mike Moore and the title track was featured in the hugely successful NBA2K23 video game.
Their quite wonderful self titled debut album Vona Vella received praise from the likes of Manchester legend Paul Heaton who raved "love the new Vona Vella stuff!", BBC Radio 1, and 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins, who enthused: "a dreamy and really great arrangement, all lovely and melancholic with those beautiful harmonies.”
Vona Vella are: Dan Cunningham (vocals, guitar, piano), Izzy Davis (vocals, guitar, flute), Jake Bott (drums), Claud J Melton (bass), Dexter Howell (guitar).
