VONA VELLA
new song OVER AND OVER (out now)
On Wednesday 9th July Nottingham-based five-piece Vona Vella release their first single in two years, entitled Over and Over, through Strap Originals and is available to listen to here.
The dreamy harmonising of Everything But The Girl. The propulsive urgency of The Strokes. The lilting folk-pop of The Coral. The introspective songcraft of Belle and Sebastian. The bittersweet, lyrical side-eyes of The Beautiful South. Vona Vella have all these elements and so many more, all weaving together to form a contemporary sound both gossamer delicate and fiercely robust.
Main vocalists Dan Cunningham and Izzy Davis veer between soaring, anthemic harmonising and irreverent, nonchalant call and response passages. Underpinning this is a smorgasbord of handmade alt-rock tones. From the classic rock drum hits to the wall-of-sound guitar attack, each part conveys the emotional tension within the song spectacularly.
Over and Over was recorded at the Albion Rooms studio in Margate and produced by Vona Vella and Jason Stafford (The Libertines, Jamie T, Sports Team).
Vona Vella say of Over and Over: “It’s about ignoring people’s imperfections so you can be close to them. Whether it be at work, or just in life, we’ve been bumping into a lot of people who piss us off, but you just have to get over it.”
The video for Over and Over was filmed by Barnaby Fairley at the Great Escape festival in Brighton on 14th May this year and then edited by legendary music photographer and filmmaker Roger Sargent (The Libertines, Fat White Family, Baxter Dury).
During April & May 2025 Vona Vella played to packed-out venues in Benelux and France whilst opening for Peter Doherty, making a rousing start to their new era as a five-piece. Among the highlights of the band’s next run of gigs is an appearance at Newcastle's Come Together Festival on 20 August when Robbie Williams headlines.
Vona Vella was started by singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Izzy and Dan, who set about making thrillingly infectious dream pop as a male/female duo, reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin. The band officially formed in Autumn 2020, after Ross Godfrey from Morcheeba heard their single Sun and decided to remix it. Once released it proved an instant viral hit, racking up over a million streams in the blink of an eye.
The band released their debut EP Go Outside Forever, in early 2022, which was co-produced by Liam Gallagher guitarist Mike Moore and the title track was featured in the hugely successful NBA2K23 video game.
Their quite wonderful self titled debut album Vona Vella (released in July 2023), received praise from the likes of Manchester legend Paul Heaton who raved "love the new Vona Vella stuff!", BBC Radio 1, and 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins, who enthused: "a dreamy and really great arrangement, all lovely and melancholic with those beautiful harmonies.”
Most recently Vona Vella have launched their regular new music night Vona Vella Presents At The Grove in Nottingham. Singer, Dan, who owns and runs The Grove nights and recording studio says: “Since opening The Grove we’ve met and worked with so many talented artists with huge potential that we felt we had to do something to help support them”. The first night of Vona Vella Presents will be on the 13th August at the Grove.
Vona Vella have amassed 130k monthly listeners on Spotify and have supported not only The Libertines and solo Peter Doherty but Tim Burgess, Morcheeba, Hak Baker and Reverend and the Makers.
Vona Vella are: Dan Cunningham (vocals, guitar, piano), Izzy Davis (vocals, guitar, flute), Jake Bott (drums), Claud J Melton (bass), Dexter Howell (guitar).
