Newcastle-based identical twin duo Dolder have today released their soul-baring debut EP The Motive via EMI. The EP features the previously released singles ‘Charlie’ and ‘Girl I Know’, alongside two new tracks, including today’s focus single - the title track. With the release of ‘Charlie’ and ‘Girl I Know’, Dolder earned support from NME, Rolling Stone, Wonderland, The Line of Best Fit, and more, with critics praising their arresting harmonies and candid, heartfelt arrangements. If there’s a special musical synergy that comes from growing up together - sharing experiences, discovering tastes in tandem, and learning to listen to each other - then the connection between Dani and Zara Dolder exists on an entirely different plane. They have been side by side since before they were even born, and now they bring that rare, intuitive harmony to the forefront with the release of their debut EP.
Speaking about The Motive, the girls share “this EP encapsulates our growth from last summer 2024 to 2025. It’s as if we’ve created an X-ray image of our feelings over the past year and put them in the form of these songs. The headlines are heartbreak, anxiety, body image issues, being a 21 year old girl, navigating our internal relationship with ourselves and everything in between that. We’ve aimed to be as vulnerable as possible with this body of work as that represents our relationship as twins too.”
Growing up, the twin sisters spent their childhood immersed in the timeless melodies of their forever inspirations - The Beatles, Eagles, and the world of Steely Dan and Glen Campbell that spun endlessly on their drummer father’s home jukebox. Now aged 21, they’re still as besotted by the old bands that shaped them, but they’ve also become devotees of modern female storytelling - from HAIM and Taylor Swift to Gracie Abrams, boygenius and Lola Young. And it’s into the sweet spot of these two ideas that Dolder, and their musically gorgeous, emotionally generous debut release lands.
Having recently completed a UK tour as support to Ben Ellis, which saw the pair play to packed rooms at venues including The Garage in London and The Academy in Manchester, Dolder will be performing an EP launch show at Zero in their hometown of Newcastle this evening, and are set to announce further live dates very soon. Stay tuned for lots more to follow.
