There’s something about stepping into a venue for the first time that sticks with you—and this one hit immediately. As a gig-goer, it almost feels overdue to say it, but this was my first time inside The Albert Hall. And what an introduction. All stained glass, towering arches and sheer presence, it’s one of Manchester’s most striking rooms—equal parts cathedral and pressure cooker—setting the tone before a single note is played.
Liverpool’s Courting open the night with their wiry, off-kilter post-punk. It’s a slightly slow ignition, but once they find their footing, the set loosens up into something far more compelling. A chaotic cowbell solo somehow lands perfectly, while the drummer’s unhinged, screaming backing vocals bring a raw edge that cuts through the mix. There’s a sense of momentum building track by track, and by the closing stretch—big guitars, pounding drums, tambourine in hand—they’ve got the room moving and ready.
Then The Cribs arrive, and any restraint the venue once held disappears instantly. The place is packed—floor to balcony—with no room to spare. The first song hits and the entire building seems to lurch into motion. The floor heaves underfoot. Beer flies through the air—one particularly well-aimed splash catching me and my camera full-on. Part hazard, part badge of honour.
From that moment on, it’s relentless. The crowd moves as one—an ocean of bodies surging in time, every lyric shouted back with total conviction. The band hold their ground at the front of the stage, soaking it in, feeding off the energy and throwing it straight back out.
A debut outing for “Rose Mists” offers a glimpse of what’s next and sits comfortably among the set’s staples. But it’s when “Men’s Needs” kicks in that the night truly tips over the edge—no one stands still, no one stays quiet. It’s pure release. They barely let it settle before launching into “Mirror Kissers”, keeping the intensity pinned at its peak.
It’s loud, chaotic, and completely unfiltered—the kind of night that reminds you exactly why live music matters. And for a first time in The Albert Hall, it’s hard to imagine a better, or messier, introduction.
