Wu-Tang Clan’s long-awaited return to Manchester came at Co-op Live on Thursday night, an occasion that felt less like a standard tour stop and more like being dropped straight into the middle of a hip-hop celebration. From the moment “Bring da Ruckus” kicked in, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a half-effort nostalgia set, Wu-Tang Clan came to make a statement, on what could well be one of their final visits to the UK.
The first run of tracks was relentless, as was the scramble in the pit, photographers and those at the barrier getting absolutely soaked by RZA’s explosive magnum spray into the crowd. “Clan in da Front, ” “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’ ” “Protect Ya Neck,” one after another with barely a pause to breathe. It had that slightly chaotic, raw energy they’ve always thrived on, wit members dipping in and out, hyping each other up, and feeding off the crowd. It wasn’t polished in a modern sense, but that’s exactly why it worked, the crowd were hooked early.
Wu-Tang split the show into sections, which helped it feel like more than just a greatest hits run. The Method Man segment was a standout, he’s still got that natural charisma, and tracks like “Bring the Pain” and “All I Need” hit hard live. The Raekwon and Ghostface moments added a different pace, especially with “Criminology” and “Ice Cream, ” giving things a bit more groove.
The tribute to Mobb Deep, with Havoc joining for “Shook Ones (Part II)” and “Quiet Storm, ” was one of those unexpected highlights, it felt genuine rather than forced, and the crowd really responded to it.
Towards the end, it turned into exactly what you’d hope for, with “C.R.E.A.M.,
” “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” and then “Triumph” to close, the crowd as vocal as it had been all night. By that point, the whole place was fully immersed, no distractions, just people rapping along. If there’s any criticism, it’s that the set was so packed that some moments felt a bit rushed, like they were trying to squeeze in everything they possibly could. But at the same time, it’s hard to complain when you’re getting that many classics in one night.
Not perfect, but real, and that’s probably why it landed as well as it did. What a great evening.
