LONDON HEADLINE SHOW AT BRIXTON HOOTANANNY ON 3RD DECEMBER
Paris-born, international songstress Ethel and long-time collaborator Banshee the Great - Grammy award-winning songwriter, composer, and producer - team up once again for their latest release, ‘Sorted’, out now on the iconic bi-coastal label +1 Records. The track is a testament to her genre-bending sound, delivering a captivating blend of low-fi, alt-pop and electronic influences. Groove-oriented and full of warmth, ‘Sorted’ showcases crystalline vocals layered over an infectious melody that lingers long after the song ends.
Speaking about its evolution and hinting of more to come, Ethel shares “’Sorted’ was born out of an emotional and creative limbo – everything felt uncertain, but something had started to shift in me. It became the first song that broke through the fog and shape the direction of the project.”
The single is accompanied by an official music video, directed by the renowned Olympic medallist turned creative director Race Imboden, where Ethel’s expressive, contemporary choreography transforms the track into a visual experience that commands repeat viewings. Ethel elaborates, “it captures me moving through liminal spaces, those in-between places that blur comfort and discomfort. I wanted to confront the parts of myself that resist being seen: intimacy, femininity, embodiment, especially in an era that demands over-explanation. I dance there, trying to find a version of myself I’ve lost, or maybe one I haven’t met yet.” Listen and watch the video via the links below:
Draped in dreamy soundscapes, Ethel released her beguiling debut EP The Burden Of Fever Dreams in March of 2024 to widespread acclaim, garnering support from titles including NME, The FADER, The Line of Best Fit, Track Star*, Clash, DIY, COLORS, La Blogotheque, Paper Magazine and Wonderland. Released via +1 Records, (the independent label home to artists such as Rejjie Snow, Anna of the North, CARRTOONS and Tiana Major9), The Burden Of Fever Dreams was also made with Ethel’s long time collaborator/producer Banshee The Great, known for his work with Pop Smoke, Isaiah Rashad, Lil Uzi Vert, and recent Grammy award-winner Doechii.
Ethel grew up in Paris, surrounded by sound, culture, and creativity. Raised in a musical family, she spent weekends in studios and long car rides soundtracked by Stevie Wonder, Prince, Marvin Gaye, and Big Star - the foundation of her lifelong love affair with music. Her own journey of discovery led her to Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Solange, before finding her breakthrough in the next generation of artists like James Blake, Noname, The Internet, and Kendrick Lamar.
A drummer since childhood, Ethel’s instinctive sense of rhythm continues to shape her instinctive, emotionally driven approach to music. A passionate dancer, she views movement as an essential extension of her songwriting, creating immersive live experiences where choreography, sound, and emotion are deeply intertwined. Inspired by visionary performers such as David Byrne, Prince, and Solange, Ethel blurs the boundaries between music and performance art, bringing a strong visual and physical presence to her work.
After spending time in London’s vibrant music scene, Ethel returned to Paris, where she began a close collaboration with producer Banshee The Great. After a year or so of collaborating and experimenting together, and with her previous tracks gaining some momentum in the city, Ethel started to have doubts about her prospects as an artist in Paris. In response, Banshee proposed the challenge of throwing caution to the wind and finishing, recording and releasing a song within the space of a week. They finished a freestyle they’d recorded over a neo-soul instrumental and reworked and dropped it. That track, titled ‘Andromeda’, was then picked up and featured in the series premiere of HBO’s hotly-discussed drama series The Idol featuring The Weeknd and Lily Rose Depp - it now boasts over 10 million streams, with all releases to date now surpassing 20 million streams across Spotify and Apple
Together, they’ve developed a sound that’s both intimate and expansive, layered with warmth, space, and intention - a sonic world built on shared trust, experimentation, and emotional depth. The two are now working on a collaborative project - a continuation of their creative partnership - set for release in spring 2026.
