Today sees the return of Friendly Fires as they release new single 'Lose All Your Friends', out now on LAB Records.
Ever since releasing their Mercury Prize-nominated self-titled debut album in 2008, it has often felt as though Friendly Fires have spent much of their time in hibernation, only emerging to release new music when the time is right for them. As the stars finally look to be realigning for the band, they are ready to share their first new music since 2019's acclaimed third album Inflorescent.
Now a slimmed-down two-piece of Ed Macfarlane and Edd Gibson, the pair's process has shifted toward a return to their roots. Garage recordings, more live drums, less polish, more human and raw, embracing the organic and allowing the music to breathe and feel more natural. Re-birth is in the air as they welcome change and new challenges.
As a song title ‘Lose All Your Friends’ may initially sound like its zeroing in on a negative. Here however, the band are approaching their new music from a place that sees them embracing the unknown, and finding a way to love the fact that you might not know whether you’re going in the right direction, but you’re going there anyway. ‘Lose All Your Friends’ revels in a kind of sun-coming-up-on-the-beach hedonism, painting something of a picture of a night out in which taking the unknown path and losing all your mates might just show you the time of your life. “Don’t be afraid of change / now is the time we should be shaking it up”, go the lyrics. It’s the sound of the sun coming up on a new day for the pair, as they discover and welcome the fact that life's missteps are all a part of how we arrive where we're meant to be.
Commenting on their return, the band says: "Sometimes you have to lose everything to start again. Embrace the chaos. Take a chance. Don’t be afraid of change."
