DEBUT EP ‘IT’S FINE ONCE YOU’RE IN’ COMING SOON

Singer-songwriter and rapper Liam Mera Kai continues to preview his upcoming debut EP with the unveiling of new single 'I WANDER', out 4th April via HeadFirst Records.

Following the release of soulful single ’wishbone’, South London rising artist Liam Mera Kai is proving to be a refreshing force on the alt hip-hop scene. As he prepares for his debut EP release this year, second single ‘I WANDER’ provides a compelling glimpse into his creative cross-genre approach to both production and songwriting.

The track emerges as a thoughtful exploration of personal doubt and the power of movement, blending introspective storytelling with a smooth, laid-back rhythm. While painting a nuanced picture of a young artist navigating his identity, ‘I WANDER’ straddles the boundaries between rap and song, incorporating subtle alternative R&B influences that highlight Liam’s knack for fusing styles.

“So often we’re questioning if we’re where we want to be. If we’re in the right job or living in the right city. Allowing yourself to ‘wander’ is the most important piece of advice I’ve ever received”, says Liam Mera Kai.

The main focus of the track is the contradiction and wordplay in the hook – ‘I wander…wonder if I’m doing it right’. The idea of wandering is sporadic, messy and to be honest, pretty overwhelming. Yet, I’d argue that it’s also necessary. You’re allowed to feel lost. You’re allowed to explore things. You’re allowed to spend some time figuring it out. You’re allowed to wander.”

About Liam Mera Kai:

Born and raised in South London, singer-songwriter/rapper Liam Mera Kai is turning heads with his blend of empowering, earnest offerings, evident in his 2023 single ‘The View’, last year’s ’wishbone’ and his upcoming debut EP, set to be released this year.

Liam has always been a thinker, seeing it as more of an opportunity than a hindrance. Delivering thought-provoking lyricism across a blend of genres, the UK artist struggled to categorise his sound, drawing influences from the authenticity of Loyle Carner, the experimentation of Bakar and the soulfulness of Paolo Nutini among others.

With an approach to songwriting that surpasses his young age, Liam delivers a fusion of alt hip-hop, neo-soul and alt R&B, occasionally layered with elements of UK dance and garage. Weaving mellow, jazzy UK hip-hop beats, introspective rhymes and impressive vocals, this South London newcomer proves he’s just as comfortable spitting bars as he is singing.

Often fusing a mellow, laidback sound with uncomfortable themes, the young artist plans to evolve his music alongside his experiences. Certain subjects run deep in Liam's music, with expressions of love, admiration, overthinking and doubt being common themes. Whether addressing excitement, confusion or pain, the artist attempts to provide one major consistency: relatability. "The aim is to combine soundscape and lyricism to encourage feeling but also thought” he explains.

With a steady string of new releases planned for the future and a unique approach blending genres and tackling introspective subject matters, the rising rapper is poised to make a fresh impression on the music scene.
