“THIS MACHINE”
OUT NOW - LISTEN HERE
Following on from their EP ‘Plum’ which was released earlier this year, The Herron Brothers have shared their new single, “This Machine”.
Inspired by train carriage messaging, a love for filmmaking, and country twangs, “This Machine” marks the first new track from The Herron Brothers since their EP ‘Plum’ arrived in January. Following seamlessly from their previous offering, the track finds Paul and Steven ruminating on the machine that we all exist within, weaving in discussions of friendship, birth, loss and everything in between.
“I started the song exactly one year ago on a train journey to York,” shares Paul, “I’d seen the electronic sign that said “This train is formed of four coaches,” and immediately had the main bit of the chorus pop in my head. “Train” became “Machine” and “Machine” sort of became everything, like the machinations of life, family, birth, death, all the things that nature processes in its cogs, giving zero shits about the individual people it is moving.”
The brothers pair offset weighty themes with slightly lighter instrumentation, adorning their lyrics with chirpy keys and bright strums. The result is an indie-pop balladry specific to The Herron Brothers. “We’re still blazing the trail for what will eventually become the barrier-breaking genre of middle-aged-harmony-based-thoughtful-indie-alt-pop,” adds Steven, “which the kids are gonna love.”
“The Machine” is out now.
About The Herron Brothers
Paul and Steven Herron, being actual brothers, have played and sang together for a lifetime. Hailing from the most north-eastern borders of England but now based in Derby, they are living proof of the old but rubbish adage, “Sharing the bath water results in musical osmosis.”
After releasing several EPs, a couple of Christmas singles, and four of five albums (depending on which brother you ask), the duo continue to develop their pairing of melancholy subject matter with unashamedly jangly, harmony-laden pop. Broadly, The Herron Brothers take their influences from pop music released between the 50s and now, from The Beatles to The Strokes, but absolute favourites who have guided their songwriting/performing journey the most are Paul Simon, Neil Finn and R.E.M.
