This is my third and last time at Somerset House this year as far as the Summer Series goes. Tonight, it’s a full-on UK R&B take over. The four acts set to take to the stage tonight, Natanya, Pxssy Palace, Jvck James and headliners Flo will showcase some of the UK’s best R&B talent.
Flo are an all-girl three-piece band from London. They had their first taste of success back in 2022 with Cardboard Box and ever since have been sharing their vocal talents with audiences all across the world. The first ever band to win the Brit award for Rising Star in 2023 and a critically acclaimed debut album, Access All Areas – the band are living up to everyone’s high expectations.
The weather doesn’t play ball for much of the evening and those who have brought an umbrella are rewarded with shelter from the on-off and sometimes heavy showers. However, it can’t dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of an expectant crowd.
Just after 9pm and as the rain clouds finally clear, Flo take to the stage. The cobblestone courtyard buzzes with energy and Flo’s harmonies flow over the crowd in the night air.
The show was a combination of three distinct sets; each being introduced by a pre-recorded audio introduction. The first set included fan favourite Fly Girl with Missy Elliott whose contribution was included on the backing track and Nocturnal which included an appearance in person from British singer and rapper Bree Runway, the first of tonight’s special guests.
During the evening excitement bubbled as KWN was seen enjoying Jvck James’ set and socialising with fans. Set two saw her make an appearance on stage and she joined the girls for an awesome rendition of their recent collaboration track, Talk You through It.
The audience included students from creative schools in and around London. I spoke to a budding singer and enthusiastic filmmaker, both of whom were here as guests of Flo ensuring the next batch of creatives get sufficient artistic opportunities, access to live music and exposure to creative and inspiring environments.
A packed third set included a stunning solo version of In My Bag and a rip-roaring version of the song that started it all off, Cardboard Box.
On an evening where the band have delivered a show which included a few new songs and a good chunk of crowd favourites, Flo have delivered a performance that blended old school soul with Gen Z flare proving once again why they are at the forefront of the UK R&B renaissance. Tonight was not just a concert it was a showcase of British R&B and marked a coming together of some of the UK’s most exciting voices.
For Flo, if tonight’s triumphant homecoming is anything to go by they are not just here to stay, they’re here to lead
