WORDS AND IMAGES TONI SLATER

The Wonder Years returned to Manchester's Albert Hall for a night of high-energy, loud pop-punk and hardcore anthems, delivering exactly what their devoted fans came for.
Gully Boys kicked off the evening with a grunge-infused punk set that immediately grabbed the crowd’s attention and set the tone for the night. The female four-piece from Minneapolis have a distinctive ’90s-inspired sound, complete with gritty guitars and driving percussion. This marked their first UK show, and they were lively, energetic, and warmed up the crowd well, laying solid foundations for the night ahead.
Free Throw followed with a high-energy, crowd-engaging and passionate set. The venue was already packed when they took to the stage, and the energy levels definitely increased by a few notches. The emo-punk band from Nashville had the crowd bouncing and singing along, leaving the audience hungry and primed for the main act.
The Wonder Years filled the Albert Hall with a raucous 90-minute set that thoroughly delighted their fans. As part of their No Closer to Heaven 10th Anniversary UK tour run, the sold-out gig carried all the intensity and passion expected from the hardcore favourites.
The set was dominated by tracks from their 2015 album release, with each song sung back word for word from the floor. It was clear the band has a deeply devoted following, and the entire performance was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from the adoring crowd. Highlights included “Cardinals”, “I Don’t Like Who I Was Then”, and “Cigarettes & Saints”.
They filled out the rest of the set with firm fan favourites such as “Dismantling Summer” and “Low Tide”. The night ended with “Came Out Swinging” from Suburbia I’ve Given You All and Now I’m Nothing, one of the band’s most anthemic songs, leaving the crowd on an undeniable high.
The audience soaked up the lyrical storytelling throughout the set, while lead singer Dan “Soupy” Campbell maintained a strong and confident stage presence. Along with the rest of the band, it was clear they engage effortlessly with the crowd and genuinely enjoy performing together. It was a high-energy night, full to the rafters with music lovers making memories, living for the sound, and embracing the incredible atmosphere the night delivered.
