The third night of the Llangollen Music Eisteddfod was pure sunshine for the soul, as reggae legends UB40 headlined an unforgettable evening packed with rhythm, energy, and heart.

Kicking things off was DJ Reggae Roast, joined by the effortlessly cool MC Mr Williamz, who brought serious dubstep beats, deep reggae cuts, and a whole lot of swagger. Mr Williamz, “cool as F%^k,” had the crowd moving from the jump, setting the tone perfectly for what was to come.

Next up was the ever-fantastic Bitty McLean, radiating high energy and positive vibes with his signature blend of classic reggae and soul. Bitty’s distinctive, smooth voice soared through the big top, charming the audience with both original material and reworked covers. Backed by a slick, polished band—including a standout brass section—Bitty delivered a tight, soulful set that felt joyful and effortless. He looked as sharp as his sound.

Then, it was time for the main event: UB40, led by the unmistakable voice of Ali Campbell, who reminded everyone why they’re still the reigning kings of British reggae. From politically charged early tracks like Food For Thought and One In Ten to massive hits like Kingston Town, Many Rivers To Cross (a personal highlight), and of course Red Red Wine, UB40 brought their full back catalogue to life with warmth and authenticity.

Ali Campbell looked fantastic and sounded even better—his voice immaculate, soulful, and still full of character, especially impressive for someone in his late sixties. The Llangollen Pavilion was absolutely buzzing: people were dancing in every available space, singing along to every word, the atmosphere electric with love for the music and the moment.

The encore was a true celebration, featuring a vibrant mash-up of classics, led by the always-animated MC Frank B, and a touching tribute to Ali’s longtime friend and UB40 original member Astro with crowd helping in the singing of A Rat In The Kitchen. The emotional crescendo included powerful sing-alongs to One In Ten, Kingston Town, and Red Red Wine, before the band closed with their beloved cover of Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love—a perfect, heartfelt ending to a phenomenal night.

From start to finish—Mr Williamz and Reggae Roast, the soulful Bitty McLean, and the legendary UB40—this was a night of pure reggae magic. As far as I’m concerned, Ali Campbell and UB40 are national treasures. What a night. What a vibe. As they say in Jamaican Patois: “It was irie. It was maad!”
